New free bus service between mainland and island

THE Penang government has introduced a new CAT Bridge free bus service to ferry passengers between Seberang Jaya on the mainland and the island.

Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow said the two-way service which will run on the Penang Bridge will be an alternative mode of transport for the people to commute between the mainland and island.

“The free trial period for the service will be for four months from Sept 1 to Dec 31, ” he said at a press conference in Komtar, George Town on Tuesday.

There will be 18 buses plying the route from 6am to 11pm daily.

“The new CAT Bridge pickup point on the mainland will be at The Blanket Hotel in Seberang Jaya.

“The bus will then head to Megamal Pinang, Jalan Baru,

before crossing the Penang Bridge to Queensbay Mall and Bukit Jambul hub in Jalan Tun Dr Awang before ending at Bayan Baru hub in Persiaran Mahsuri, ” he said.

The pickup point on the island will be at the Bayan Baru hub.

“The CAT Bridge will operate around the Free Industrial Zone (FIZ) at peak hours and there will be eight trips which consist of four trips to FIZ A and FIZ B and four trips to FIZ C.

“The peak hours are from 6am to 8.15am and from 4.50pm to 7pm, ” he said.

Chow said its introduction came without additional cost to the state government.

He explained that the service would utilise the same allocations already given for Rapid Penang to run the BEST FIZ bus service, which he said would be replaced by the CAT Bridge.

The BEST FIZ bus service used to bring factory workers from Seberang Jaya to the FIZ and Bayan Lepas Industrial Park areas.

“With CAT Bridge, the BEST FIZ service will be stopped as CAT Bridge will cover the FIZ area, ” he said.
