THE STAR’S Kedah stringer Eric Tan Guan Cheong has won second place in the News and Current Affairs category of the Kedah Media Awards 2019 competition.
His winning story called ‘A Mother’s Worst Nightmare – A Drug Addict At Just 13’ was published on the front page and page 6 of The Star on Aug 21,2019.
He received RM500, a trophy and certificate of appreciation from Zaki Abdul Aziz Daud, the director of Environment Idaman Sdn Bhd (E-Idaman), at a ceremony in Alor Setar on Thursday.
M. Hifzuddin Ikhsan, Muhammad Mustakim Ramli and Safuri Kamaruddin from Berita Harian emerged champion in this category.
The competition was held for the first time by Kelab Media Elit Kedah (Kmek) and E-Idaman in collaboration with the Kedah government.
The aim of the competition is to recognise the contributions of media practitioners in Kedah.
The awards are divided into seven categories – Economics and Entrepreneurship, Environment and Health, Sports and Recreation, Agriculture and Agrotech, News and Current Affairs, Best Mandarin News and Best Picture.
For each category, the first, second and third-placed winners received cash prizes along with plaques and certificates.
The champions of the categories are entitled to compete for the top awards – Best News/Online News Report and Best TV News Report.
These awards offer each winner RM1,500, a plaque, certificate and 2D/1N stay voucher at Adya Hotel, Langkawi.

Economics and Entrepreneurship – M. Hifzuddin Ikhsan (Berita Harian).
Environment and Health – Kumaran Rajamoney and Shazwan Kamal Ahjmad Shazalli (TV3).
Sports and Recreation – Abd Hadi Che Awang and Norshahril Md Yusup (Astro Awani).
Agriculture and Agrotech – Salim Aziz (Astro Awani).
Best Picture – Sharul Hafiz Zam (New Straits Times).
Best Mandarin News –Jerry Liau Yee Shih (Guang Ming Daily).
Best News/Online News Report – M. Hifzuddin Ikhsan, Muhammad Mustakim Ramli and Safuri Kamaruddin (Berita Harian).
Best TV News Report – Kumaran Rajamoney and Shazwan Kamal Ahmad Shazalli (TV3).
Former Kedah health director Datuk Norhizan Ismail received the Kedah Media Special Award. He is now the director of the Medical Development division in the Health Ministry.
