CENTRAL Terengganu Development Authority (Ketengah) hopes 70% of areas at Kenyir Lake will be provided with telecom- munication service coverage by 2021.

Its chairman Datuk Razali Idris said that for now, there were only three telecommunication towers at Kenyir Lake.

They are located at Camar Island, Bayas Island and Tanjung Mentong, providing coverage for only 10% of the man-made lake spanning 260,000 hectares.

“Telecommunication service coverage at Kenyir Lake is important because if any unwanted incident happens like tourists going missing and boat accidents, those on the mainland can immediately deliver aid.

“For now, the telecommunication coverage at the lake, including the Internet, is very weak.

“If you are more than 10 minutes from Gawi Base, the coverage will become increasingly limited.

“In fact, you won’t be able to make a phone call, ” he said at the 2020 Kenyir Lake Tourism Development Workshop at Orchid Farm at the lake in Hulu Terengganu.

According to Razali, the telecommunication coverage is also crucial for tourists to keep in touch with their families and friends while on vacation at the lake.

Therefore, he said it is hoped that the Government, especially the Communications and Multimedia Ministry, would consider Ketengah’s request to expedite efforts to improve the telecommunication at the lake.

“We know telecommunication operators may not want to invest in Kenyir Lake due to its large area and the long distance between its islands so we hope the Government will invest for the sake of the people, ” he said.

Meanwhile, Razali also proposed for a communication terminal centre to be built first if the effort to add more telecommunication towers could not be realised due to high costs.

He said the communication terminal centre would track the location of all boats sailing around the lake.

“Each boat will be equipped with a wireless device that connects them to the terminal centre, therefore we will know their exact location if any unwanted incident occurs, ” he said while suggesting that the terminal centre be built at the Ketengah office situated at Gawi Base. — Bernama
