SIBU: Lack of civic consciousness among residents is said to be among the reasons for frequent flash floods here.

Sibu Municipal Council chairman Clarence Ting said some people did not think twice about disposing of their rubbish into drains and clogging them.

“When there is a downpour, these rubbish-filled drains overflow and cause flash floods” he added.

He said residents must take care of the environment to prevent problems like floods.

“Drains which are kept clean will be able to hold excess water from a downpour, ” he said.

Ting added that during checks at Jalan Simpoh, that was prone to floods, it was found that the drains in the area were clogged with all kinds of rubbish, preventing water flow.

“Council workers had to clear the drain.

“I hope no more rubbish will be thrown here, ” said Ting.

He said council workers had also cleared the undergrowth near a drain at Brooke Drive.
