PUAN Sri Cheong Guek Mee (pic), the wife of former Housing and Local Government Minister Tan Sri Chor Chee Heung, passed away at Kedah Medical Centre (KMC) in Alor Setar, Kedah. She was 63.
Chor, 66, who is Kedah MCA executive adviser, said his wife died of heart disease on Wednesday.
He said on Tuesday, Cheong had complained of chest tightness before she was rushed to the hospital.
“Ten minutes after arriving at the Kedah Medical Centre, her heartbeat stopped but the doctors and nurses managed to resuscitate her before placing her in the Intensive Care Unit, ” said Chor, when met at his house in Taman Lumba Kuda in Alor Setar, Kedah.
He said Cheong breathed her last at 2.30pm on Wednesday.
She leaves behind a son Chor Jack, 34, and two daughters — Dr Chor Jean, 29, and Chor Jayne, 32.
“Jack, Jayne and I were with her during her last moments as Jean was still on her way back from abroad.
“Unfortunately, she didn’t leave behind any words for us, ” he said.
Jack said his mother did not have any history of heart problems or major illness.
“It came as a shock that she left us so suddenly, ” he said.
Yesterday, former MCA president Tun Dr Ling Liong Sik and his wife Toh Puan Ena Ling, Universiti Tunku Abdul Rahman (UTAR) council members Datuk Lee Leck Cheng and Datuk Lim Si Cheng, Alor Setar MCA division chairman Datuk Chong Itt Chew, MCA veteran Tan Sri William Chek and several leaders paid their last respects to Cheong.
Also present were Kedah PKR chairman Datuk Johari Abdul and vice-chairman Simon Ooi.
The funeral will be held at 10am tomorrow at 2550E, Taman Lumba Kuda, Alor Setar.
The cortège will then leave for the crematorium at Nian En Memorial Park in Kebun 500, Pokok Sena.
