Relief fund created for those in need

Dapur Jalanan Kuala Lumpur setting up in Jalan Panggong to distribute food aid to the homeless and marginalised communities.

A HONG Leong Foundation Covid-19 Fund has been created to provide critical immediate relief to people in dire need among the B40 segment and frontliner support.

These are mainly families or individuals, seniors, differently-abled individuals from households with income of RM3,000 and below, and daily wage earners affected due to loss of jobs or those retrenched as a result of the economic shutdown brought about by the pandemic.

It includes those who do not receive any aid from other private sector providers or government-linked agencies aside from the government’s three stimulus packages, including the National Economic Recovery Plan (Penjana).

While the pandemic has seen an outpouring of contributions towards easing the burden of our medical system and front-line healthcare workers, Hong Leong Foundation recognises the need and urgency to work with non-governmental organisations (NGOs) to provide immediate relief to uplift affected communities, as funds normally channelled to them may have been temporarily directed towards the fight against Covid-19.

Foundation executive director Quek Sue Yian said, “We hope this contribution, which is a very small part of the collective contribution from individuals and businesses across Malaysia, will provide some relief to the economic pressures faced by the communities impacted by the pandemic.”

The RM3mil fund is separate from donations pledged by the Hong Leong Group of companies.

In tandem with these initiatives, the foundation is also providing long-term solutions to assist communities in need by intensifying its existing skills programmes such as Roar Skills and Roar Future, and job employability initiatives carried

out at Jumpstart@65 which will cater to those whose jobs have been affected as a result of the initial phases of the movement control order (MCO).

The foundation continues to work with NGOs to identify those in immediate need of relief and has since disbursed funds, food and hygiene items to, among others, up to 400 at-risk families in Klang, Kechara Soup Kitchen, Dignity for Children Foundation, Woman Aid Organisation, Global Peace Foundation, Generasi Gemilang, Malaysian Care, Malaysian Association For The Blind, Chow Kit Foundation, Pacos Trust, Dapur Jalanan, All Women’s Action Society, Inspire Welfare Association, Hope Worldwide Malaysia Welfare Association, Picha Eats, Ideas Autism Centre and Raleigh International.

Dapur Jalanan Kuala Lumpur communications coordinator Hadi Khalid said, “We are grateful for the timely and much-needed support from Hong Leong Foundation.

“The contributions will certainly help Dapur Jalanan channel essential aid to where they are needed in an effort to uplift and strengthen those who need it the most, ” he added.

Malaysian Association for the Blind chief executive officer George Thomas echoed this sentiment.

“With the continued support of organisations such as Hong Leong Foundation, we are able to coordinate well to ensure our vulnerable patrons are cared for during this critical time, ” he said.

Funds are also channelled to Hospital Segamat, where medical supplies, specifically equipment for its intensive care unit, are rapidly declining, as well as the University Malaysia Covid-19 Fund to help purchase drugs for Covid-19 patients with pre-existing immune- related diseases, to reduce their dependence on ventilators.

Some of the funds will be channelled to Saora Industries to build two 3D-ventilators which will prove to be useful in providing effective healthcare for those affected by the pandemic.

Animals were not forgotten in this initiative as funds were channelled to Zoo Negara and the SPCA of Seberang Perai, Penang to help them weather the storm temporarily.

To ensure aid is provided to as many deserving individuals as possible, the foundation will be addressing issues affecting underserved rural communities in the country.

Individuals or organisations looking for support to sustain their cause can apply for funding at, provided that they fulfil the prescribed criteria.
