Hotel group lends helping hand

AS MALAYSIANS continue to battle the Covid-19 pandemic and resulting economic downturn, Sunway Resort Hotel & Spa has launched multiple initiatives to help ease the burden of selected groups in the Klang Valley.

The hotel donated its used pillows that are still in good condition to various beneficiaries – B40 families, Sungai Buloh Hospital, which is one of the designated facilities to treat Covid-19 patients, and a public kindergarten in Shah Alam which is looking after children whose parents are working as frontliners.

A total of 962 used pillows were collected and distributed with the assistance of Adab Youth Garage (AYG), a non-profit organisation based in Bangi, Selangor.

Sunway Resort Hotel & Spa’s chefs and chefs from Sunway Putra Hotel and Sunway Velocity Hotel also cooked and prepared more than 4,500 packs of bubur lambuk that were distributed to healthcare workers at Hospital Kuala Lumpur, Hospital Sungai Buloh, Hospital Serdang, Hospital Kajang, other essential workers and selected B40 communities in Selangor on a weekly basis during Ramadan.

To add more cheer to the festive season, 200 packs of Raya cookies were distributed to several orphanages in the Klang Valley. This initiative is part of Sunway Group’s month-long “Raya Cheer” campaign with AYG.

These activities are in addition to the donation of more than 3,000 bars of Soapful repurposed soap to juveniles at Puncak Alam Correction Centre for three months from April 1 to June 30, Human Aid Selangor Society, Kajang Women’s Prison, Kechara Soup Kitchen and the District Parole Offices and Parolees, besides a donation of 14,525 hotel toiletries to Hospital Sungai Buloh to help with the shortage due to an additional 600 wards being set up to treat Covid-19 patients.

“We feel encouraged that during these uncertain times, we are able to give to those in need, based on our existing resources, ” said Sunway Resort Hotel & Spa senior general manager Alex Castaldi.

“The hotel will continue to align our business model, operating strategies and corporate culture with sustainable practices and solutions, regardless of the situation we are in.”

These initiatives are part of the #SunwayForGood movement, which is Sunway’s commitment towards a sustainable environment, economy and society.

Since the launch of the Jeffrey Sachs Centre on Sustainable Development at Sunway University via a US$10mil gift by the Jeffrey Cheah Foundation to the United Nations Sustainable Development Solutions Network in December 2016, Sunway Group has been powering their 13 business divisions to develop business strategies that are aligned to the Sustainable Development Goals.
