JOHOR BARU: Schools have been closed since March 18 due to the Covid-19 pandemic but this has not stopped students from showing appreciation to their teachers in conjunction with Teachers Day today.
As they cannot celebrate the event in schools with special performances and gifts for their teachers like in previous years, some students have turned to online platforms to mark the special day.
Johor English Language Teaching Association (Jelta) president Vincent D’ Silva said he was surprised when he received virtual cards via emails from two of his students ahead of Teachers Day.
“I was overjoyed when I received the cards from my students.
“It is a nice feeling to know that students appreciate us, ” he said, adding that he hoped schools would be able to celebrate the event once the conditional MCO was lifted and schools allowed to reopen.
Teacher Mazlina Mazalan, 34, said she was touched when her students wished her for Teachers Day during a virtual classroom session.
“The event slipped my mind and I was pleasantly surprised to hear the greetings, ” she said.
Mazlina said some former students had also posted Teachers Day greetings on social media.
“Although this is the first time I am unable to celebrate with my students, it is not any less meaningful this year, ” she said. – By VENESA DEVI
