KUALA LUMPUR: The Federal Territories Ministry will focus on creating job opportunities for locals, following the vacancies left by foreign workers, says Tan Sri Annuar Musa (pic).
At the same time, the Federal Territories Minister also challenged locals not to be picky with their choice of jobs, especially in a post-MCO economy.
He urged locals to take up every available opportunity, no matter how small.
Annuar had earlier told a number of wholesaler associations not to continue to take the easy route by hiring foreign workers and urged them to continue using local workers at markets instead.
“Workers that are still needed at the wholesale market are much more than the number of homeless people, and we are considering taking in youths, especially when the new wholesale market is completed where the working environment is better, ” he said.
“Jobs that we think are dirty and unpleasant to do, locals do not want, and the same opportunity ends up going to foreigners.
“It is a longstanding issue, but complaining about it is not enough, and as the saying goes, ‘If not now, when? If not us, who?’, ” Annuar said during a Facebook live briefing.
“We also need the local manpower to ensure we do not go back to taking back thousands of foreign workers.”
Annuar added that the ministry is exploring more ways to reignite the economy, and will be working with other Ministries to come up with a programme.
