Create e-platform for us, urge traders in Kedah

FOOD traders in Kedah want the state to establish an online business platform or e-Bazaar as an alternative way for them to earn income during Ramadan.

This comes following the Federal Government’s decision to prohibit the operation of Ramadan bazaars nationwide during the movement control order (MCO) period.

Norhayati Drani, 39, a grilled fish seller, said an online platform was the only viable choice for petty traders this year.

“I have been doing business at a bazaar for a long time. With the ban on Ramadan bazaars this year, I will have no income.

“Last year, I sold grilled fish throughout Ramadan and was able to generate a net profit of RM12,000,” she said.

Norhayati, who usually sets up her stall at the Taman Suria Ramadan bazaar in Jitra with help from her husband, said this time, she plans to promote her products via social media and offer cash-on-delivery (COD) service.

“I understand the reason for the ban. The Government is acting in the best interest of the public,” said the mother of a three-year-old.

Meanwhile, Mohamad Faiz Ahmad, 32, opined that an online platform must be managed and coordinated by the state government for the welfare of genuine traders.

“We do not want the existing traders to be sidelined as now, there may be many others looking to generate additional income during the MCO period.

“The online platform must give top priority to existing traders,” he said.

Mohamad Faiz, a drinks seller, had been operating a stall at the Taman Suria Ramadan bazaar since 2008.

However, he said not all traders could benefit from the COD model.

“It will be difficult to run a drinks business with the COD model as the ice melts easily. Besides, drinks can easily be made at home,” said Mohamad Faiz who is looking to sell other food items this Ramadan.

Meanwhile, Kedah industry and investment, local government and housing committee chairman Tan Kok Yew said that the state was planning to create an online platform for Ramadan bazaar traders this year.

He said the working paper was ready to be presented at the state exco meeting.

“If all goes smoothly, we will wait for Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Mukhriz Mahathir to announce the plan soon,” he said. — Bernama
