WITH the aim of fulfilling UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) through River of Life activities, Management and Science University (MSU) has signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with Friends of Rivers Malaysia (FoRM).

The collaboration was aimed at uplifting and upgrading the Damansara River stretch behind MSU’s main campus in Shah Alam.

“Life revolves around water, and rivers are essential for life, ” said MSU president Prof Tan Sri Dr Mohd Shukri Ab Yajid.

“The same way community work has been integral to us in the past 39 years, environmental sustainability is not just rhetoric at MSU but one of our pillars. We feel the importance of community engagement and being part of the UN SDGs movement.

“We embrace Goals 1 to 17 as our DNA. From our award-winning MyCoral, a biomarine project by MSU’s International Medical School (IMS) in Terengganu to the MyMountain project, marking the official reopening of Gunung Nuang in the district of Hulu Langat’s hutan lipur here in Selangor, environmental sustainability and community work are part and parcel of the university; building character, competitiveness and concern in our students.”

FoRM founder and chairman Prof Datuk Seri Dr Zaini Ujang said an action-oriented working framework was needed for the river ecosystem. The environmental engineer and scientist, who had served as Energy, Green Technology and Water Ministry secretary-general, went on to present “Public participation framework towards river economy” at the MSU Performing Arts Theatre.

Signing for MSU were Prof Mohd Shukri and Industrial Linkages and Entrepreneurship vice-president Prof Dr Abdul Jalil Ghazali, while FoRM was represented by Prof Zaini and deputy chairman Mansor Abd Ghani.

Also present were Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia Student Affairs deputy vice-chancellor Prof Datuk Dr Othman A. Karim, MSU senior management and FoRM members.
