SIBU: Sibu Municipal Council (SMC), in collaboration with three bus companies, will be holding a Park and Ride (Carbon-Free Day) event on March 21.
People are urged to leave their vehicles at home and take a free bus ride around the city.
SMC councillor Jenny Ting, who chairs the event’s organising committee, said the event was one of the activities in conjunction with Earth Hour and Love Earth Day 2020.
The council was also using it as a possible launching pad for a free hydrogen bus service.
“There is free bus service in Selangor and there is also Kuching’s hydrogen bus service that offers passengers free rides. We hope to have a similar service in future to reduce carbon emission, ” Ting said at a press conference.
As for the Park and Ride event, she said it covered three routes: Sanyan-Farley Supermarket-Sing Kwong (Salim) Supermarket-Sanyan; Sanyan-Star Mega Mall-Sanyan; and Sanyan-Civic Centre-Sanyan.
Each bus company is Sibu will take one route. The bus companies involved are Sungai Merah Bus Company and Lanang Road Bus Company.
Ting said the half-day event would be from 8am to noon for a half-hour journey.
“Those who are interested can register on the spot for the ride on March 21. But it is better for them to register online few days before the event so that better arrangements can be made, ” she said.
She added there would be activities inside the bus to make the occasion merrier.
Another activity for this year’s Earth Hour and Love Earth Day is segregation of waste and food composting.
“We will also have eco-brick competition where participants use plastic bottles to make items like walls. This event is to encourage the people to re-use plastic bottles in a meaningful way instead discarding them, ” said Ting.
