ONE hundred underprivileged families were each presented with a hamper, a RM200 angpow and essential goods by Petroliam Nasional Berhad (Petronas) under its Sentuhan Kasih (Touch of Love) programme to mark Chinese New Year.
Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow accompanied by his wife Tan Lean Kee were invited by Yayasan Petronas, the corporate social responsibility arm of Petronas, to hand over the items to the families at the Caring Society Complex in George Town.
Chow said Penang was the sixth state to hold this event organised by Petronas as part of its CSR initiative.
“It is good to see a multi- national company helping poor people during the festive season, ” he said.
Petronas corporate affairs senior manager Zulkifli Othman said that since the programme started in 2005, they have helped more than 21,000 poor people.
“For this Chinese New Year period, we will help 1,500 people nationwide.
“Our aim is to share what we have with the people, especially during all the major festivals.
“Our CSR initiatives are mainly focused on education, environment and the wellbeing of the people, ” he said.
After the event, Chow and Petronas staff took part in the tossing of yee sang with the aid recipients.
Sentuhan Kasih is part of Yayasan Petronas’ community wellbeing and development focus area.
It was initiated to coincide with all the major celebrations in Malaysia.
It provides an avenue for the foundation to work with communities to provide for their basic needs.
