Yew says the council will also increase the number of multi-lift containers at public markets.

THE Penang Island City Council (MBPP) will carry out additional scheduled collections of domestic and bulk waste for the Chinese New Year period.

Mayor Datuk Yew Tung Seang said the additional services were aimed at accommodating the higher volume of garbage during the festive season.

“The services will be free and no claims should be made by individuals or contractors carrying out the garbage collection and cleaning service during this period, ” he said during a press conference at the Batu Maung solid waste transfer station on Wednesday.

Yew said the additional collection services would be available on Jan 24 and 25 for domestic waste and from now until Jan 24 for normal-size bulk garbage.

He said the additional collection services might be extended for one more day until Jan 26 if the need arose.

Yew said MBPP would also increase the number of multi-lift garbage containers to eight at several public markets on the island.

They will operate as waste disposal hotspots.

He said the containers would be available for bulk waste like old furniture, mattresses and pillows during the upcoming festive period beginning on Monday.

He also encouraged house owners to dismantle their large furniture like old sofas, tables and cabinets into small pieces by themselves as this will save space in the lorry during the collection process.

“They are advised to call the MBPP urban services department at 04-2824284 for collection and cleaning, ” he said.

For any enquiries and complaints, the public can call the MBPP hotline at 04-263 7637 (24 hours) or WhatsApp 016-200 4082.
