THE first edition of the Experience Penang International Coastal Run 2020 will be held on March 15 this year at the Queensbay Mall outdoor car park.

The event, crafted to capture the untapped dynamism of Penang, will embrace a carnival atmosphere with an underlying theme of ‘healthy living’.

Its two main events are the 11.5km run for adults and 5km run for family and children, which is a non-competitive fun run.

State tourism development, arts, culture and heritage committee chairman Yeoh Soon Hin said the run was designed to attract all levels of participants and not just the serious long-distance runners.

“Everyone is encouraged to take part as each participant who finishes within three hours for both events will receive a certificate of participation.”

He said one of the attractive highlights of the fun run was that five food stations along the coastal route of the run would be dispensing free Penang street food.

“It is a whole new experience for participants to be engaged in a healthy activity and be involved in Penang’s favourite pastime, eating.

“To ensure that we present a truly ‘Penang’ experience, various stalls will be set up along the route and runners can enjoy char koay teow or teh tarik while running, ” he said in his speech before launching the Experience Penang International Coastal Run 2020 gimmick at the Esplanade on New Year’s Day.

The scenic run will start and finish at Persiaran Bayan Indah, with the run held along the coastal route towards the Sultan Abdul Halim Mu’adzam Shah Bridge before looping back to the starting point.

Participants who register for the run will be entitled to a running T-shirt, goodie bag, finisher’s medal, e-certificate and light refreshments.

The first 2,000 participants will be entitled to an early bird pricing for the 11.5km run, while early bird rates apply for another first 1,000 participants for the 5km run.

Registration fee for the 11.5km is priced at RM60 for early birds and RM80 after the first 2,000 slots while rates for the 5km run range from RM90 to RM260 depending on the number of participants in the family team.
