New Penang-Taipei direct flights soon

Hsu (right) briefing Yeoh about the new daily flights between Penang and Taipei that are set to commence from Jan 23.

TAIWANESE flight company Starlux Airlines has chosen Penang for its maiden flight to Malaysia.

The once-daily direct flight between Penang International Airport (PEN) and Taoyuan International Airport (TPE) in Taipei, Taiwan, would be using the Airbus A321neo with a 188-seating capacity.

Penang tourism development, arts, culture and heritage committee chairman Yeoh Soon Hin said the state had been working with Starlux since June last year to facilitate the new route opening.

“All is set to go pending approval of the Foreign Air Operator Certificate (FAOC) by the Civil Aviation Authority of Malaysia (CAAM) and the application for the landing permit.

“We have relayed the message to CAAM to expedite the review process of the application and hope that the permit will be issued this week, ” he said during a press conference in Komtar on Tuesday.

Yeoh added that Taiwan was among the top three destinations to visit for Penangites with over 130,000 passengers heading there annually in recent years.

Starlux Airlines Malaysia branch manager Chien-Wen Hsu said the airlines’ first flight to Penang will commence on Jan 23.

He said currently, Starlux has direct flights to Macau, China and Da Nang, Vietnam, adding that Penang was chosen due to its high passenger traffic.

“We conducted a survey and found that about 80% of all flights from Penang to Taiwan were filled.

“The new flight with 180 economy class and eight business class seats will open up more opportunities for tourism exchange, ” he said.

Hsu also said the sale of tickets would commence once all necessary approvals were obtained.
