Schoolchildren wading through floodwaters to get to SK Sg Tunoh in Kapit district.

MIRI: Students in some parts of Sarawak had to wade through floodwaters and endure mud flow in their schools on the first day of the new session yesterday.

Torrential rain hit two districts in central Sarawak, Selangau and Kapit, affecting the schools and other areas badly.

State Disaster Relief Management Committee said the Education Department was keeping tabs on the situation at schools.

Committee secretariat head Major Ismail Mahedin said the road to SK Sungai Selangau was cut off by floods.

“The student turnout was about 68% as many could not get past the flooded roads while SK Sungai Tunoh Kapit was covered in 1.5m-high floodwaters, with mud everywhere.

“The school stayed open but the turnout was very poor, ” he said.

Sarawak is still experiencing heavy rain in various areas as the landas season persists.
