THE who’s who in the Information Technology industry will converge on Penang during the 24th World Congress on Information Technology (WCIT) 2020.
Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow said the three-day event would feature some 4,000 visionaries, captains of the industry, government leaders and academics, and 160 global speakers from more than 80 countries.
“WCIT 2020 will position Malaysia as the gateway to Southeast Asia, connecting the world, ” he said during a recent press conference at Komtar.
The congress, known as the Olympics of the world’s information technology conferences, is an international signature event since 1978.
It will be held at Setia SPICE Convention & Exhibition Centre from Sept 14 to Sept 16.
Malaysia last hosted the WCIT in Kuala Lumpur in 2008.
It secured total sales and investments worth RM8.3bil and created more than 20,000 jobs then.
Some 800 business meetings were also held during the congress then, capturing over RM1.24bil worth of business opportunities for the ICT industry in the country.
Besides the congress, Chow said Penang Techfest2020, an international technology festival, would also be held at several locations in George Town from Sept 11 to Sept 20.
The 10-day festival is a state initiative jointly organised by the National Tech Association of Malaysia (Pikom) and Malaysia Digital Economy Corporation (MDEC).
It will showcase the latest innovation and technology from around the world.
The buildings and streets throughout the state will be turned into technology showcase sites featuring networking, competitions, panel discussions and immersive trials with emerging technology.
There will be 10 headliners during the festival. They are ‘24th WCIT 2020’, ‘5G Zone’, ‘When Heritage, Arts and Culture Meet’, ‘The Future of Travel Technology’, ‘Esports’, ‘Future Cities Connect’, ‘Intelligent Mobility and Transport’, ‘Yummy Foodtech’, ‘Startup Marketplace and Showdown’ and ‘Drones Use Cases’.
Also present were state tourism development committee chairman Yeoh Soon Hin, Penang Global Tourism chairman Ooi Chok Yan, Penang Island City Council mayor Datuk Yew Tung Seang and Seberang Prai City Council mayor Datuk Rozali Mohamud.
Others at the press conference were Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) chief digital officer Gerard Lim Kim Meng, Malaysia Digital Economy Corporation Sdn Bhd chief operating officer Datuk Ng Wan Peng, Pikom chairman Danny Lee and Bank Negara Malaysia (BNM) Link and Offices Department head Hasjun Hashim.
