A RESTAURANT owner was elated after gathering 37 ex-schoolmates to celebrate their 50th birthday at his eatery.
Zainudin Zainal Abidin reconnected with former schoolmates of SK Sri Aman in Ayer Itam, Penang, after one of them visited his restaurant in Tanjung Tokong.
“It all started two months ago, when a former schoolmate visited my restaurant with her family.
“After chatting with her, we started reaching out to more schoolmates and planned for this gathering.
“We are simply ecstatic over this reunion because for the 38 of us, many are meeting up for the first time in 38 years, ” he said at his Bahtera Impian Restaurant in Straits Quay.
Although they managed to locate over 60 ex-schoolmates, only half of the number were able to attend the gathering.
The joyous reunion party saw the former pupils reminiscing about their time in school while tucking into the sumptuous spread at the restaurant.
There were also games, a slide show of old pictures, a cake-cutting ceremony, karaoke session as well as lucky draw.
Muhammad Ali Kamaruddin, 50, said he was thrilled to meet many of his friends from his childhood.
“I could not recognise some of them, but it was a splendid occasion with lots of fun, laughter and excitement.
“It will definitely be one of the sweetest moments in my life. Kudos to our friends who organised this. We hope it will be a start to many more reunions, ” he said.
Rafidah Shuid, an administrative officer, 50, said: “This reunion brought back many nostalgic moments that we shared in our school days. I hope to stay in touch with most of them. I am looking forward to a bigger gathering next year.”
