People started lining up for the free tang yuan as early as 6am.

MORE than 12,000 pieces of tang yuan (glutinous rice balls) were distributed to the public by Fung Wong Biscuits at the Winter Solstice Festival in Petaling Street, Kuala Lumpur.

This was the sixth annual event organised by Fung Wong since 2014 and it was supported by Otea Cafe, UCO Pastry, Restoran Wan Loy and Taman Connaught Night Market Ultraman.

“Although the tang yuan were given out at 9am, many of the recipients lined up as early as 6am,” said Petaling Street KRT president and third-generation member of the family business, Datuk Chan Kwok Chin.

“Most of the people who came were homeless senior citizens.

“Winter Solstice is one of the most important festivals for the Chinese, where they gather with their families.

“Unfortunately, some are unable to celebrate it with their loved ones.

“Since the 500 bowls of tang yuan we prepared last year was not enough, we have added 100 bowls this year so that more people can enjoy it,” he added.

Besides tang yuan, goodie bags comprising gifts such as Fung Wong biscuits, cakes, sugar cane drink and red packet were also distributed.

Restoran Wan Loy owner Wong Thiam Yow, who was responsible for making the tang yuan, said this was his fourth year organising the event with Fung Wong.

“We made preparations for about a week, and we started making the tang yuan at 5am today.

“All the tang yuan were freshly made with the help of my family members and 15 employees.

“I also brought my two children, aged 12 and nine, to help out. I hope to pass on the festival’s tradition to them and instil in them a love for helping those in need,” he added.
