SAPURA Cycling Team’s Mohd Zawawi Azman, who returned empty-handed from the 30th SEA Games in Manila, Philippines, has a chance to redeem some lost pride as he works to defend his title in Tour de Selangor 2019 from today to Sunday.
The 25-year-old will want to swiftly get over the disappointment of only managing 16th place in the SEA Games road race, with a strong performance in the five-stage Tour de Selangor which is classified by the International Cycling Union as a 2.2 category race.
“This race will forever evoke memories for me, because the win in 2017 was my first-ever overall victory in stage race. I have not tasted similar success since then.
“This might be the perfect opportunity to repeat that success, especially with the stages being very familiar with routes we regularly ride both in training and in races, ” said Zawawi during a press conference to announce Sime Darby Property’s entry as official sponsor for the event.
The final flag-off for Tour de Selangor, the fifth stage on Sunday, will take place at the Sime Darby Property Sales Gallery in Bandar Bukit Raja.
Sime Darby Property general manager Mohd Idris Abdullah said the choice of venue was in line with Bandar Bukit Raja emerging as an increasingly popular choice for sporting events.
“We are proud to support this event that will see cyclists from 20 local and international teams making their way from our sales gallery to the finishing line in Shah Alam.
“This event marks the second time Bandar Bukit Raja was selected as a venue for a cycling event this year and we hope to welcome more sporting events to the township in the near future, ” he said.
“Sports promotes healthy living, a key emphasis at Bandar Bukit Raja.
“Since 2002, we have been shaping it to be a township that offers not only superior connectivity, but also a close-knit community and an environment that promotes healthy living, with an emphasis on physical and emotional wellness of the community, ” Mohd Idris added.
Tour de Selangor 2019 will cover a total distance of 679.2km over the five stages of racing, with a total prize money package of RM70,000 on offer for competing teams.
