Safety checks along Sarawak-Sabah gas pipeline

MIRI: Safety checks are being carried out along Sarawak-Sabah giant gas pipeline that stretches across 600km.

The safety checks at the interstate pipeline route are being carried out by national petroleum giant Petronas which manages the project.

Petronas issued a circular to inform all villagers living along the route about the safety checks that would involve releasing gas from its valves at different sections of the pipeline.

“When gas is released it can cause loud sounds.

“Petronas will station extra workers along the route to ensure safety of the operation, ” the circular stated.

It said the public must not panic if they hear explosive sounds during the safety checks.

The exercise will be carried out along Miri to Bintulu stretch of the pipeline until Wednesday.

Then until Nov 31, the blow down will be carried out at the Bintulu stretch.

From Dec 2 to Dec 21, the safety operations will extend to Lawas -Kimanis stretch of the pipeline that snakes through the mountains of northern Sarawak into Sabah.The oil company has issued notices on this exercise to the relevant environment and safety agencies.
