SEVEN countries are expected at this year’s Genting-Selangor International Junior Open Tennis Championships.

Other than Malaysia, the countries are the Philippines, Singapore, Vietnam, Indonesia, Uzbekistan and Tajikistan.

A total of 224 players will be taking part in the championship.

The tournament, to be held from Nov 23 to 27, consists of four events which are singles and doubles boys and girls, divided into five age groups (Under-8,10,12,14, and 16).

Petaling Jaya mayor Datuk Mohd Sayuthi Bakar said the tournament had received worldwide recognition and was an anticipated event every year.

“From this tournament, our players can strengthen and hone their skills when faced with players from other countries.

“I was told that many talented young children were recognised for their skills, thanks to efforts by Petaling Jaya City Council (MBPJ) and Selangor Tennis Association (STA) in introducing mini tennis to children under eight years old, ” said Sayuthi.

STA vice-president Datuk Tengku Mohamad Tengku Harun said this year, many young tennis players in Selangor made a name for themselves representing Malaysia.

He also thanked title sponsors Genting Malaysia Bhd as well as co-sponsors F&N Beverages Marketing Sdn Bhd (100 Plus) and Dunlop Srixon Sports Asia Sdn Bhd.

The 17th Genting-Selangor International Junior Open Tennis Championships 2019 will be held at four venues, namely Astaka Sports Complex in Petaling Jaya, MBPJ Sports Complex, the tennis court in Jalan SS 3/14, and PKNS Sports Complex in Kelana Jaya.

This year, the tournament offers vouchers worth RM10,600, medals and certificates of participation as well as national ranking points for local players.

The tournament is supported by the Lawn Tennis Association of Malaysia, Selangor State Sports Council and Universiti Teknologi Mara sports unit.
