Sunway Malls emerged a big winner at the International Council of Shopping Centres (ICSC) Asia-Pacific Awards, bagging two awards for two of its malls.
ICSC is a global trade association of the mall and retail real estate industry, advocating for the industry to be broadly recognised for the integral role it plays in the social, civic and economic vibrancy of communities across the globe.
Sunway Pyramid won gold for its mobile app under the Emerging/ Digital Technology category, while Sunway Putra Mall won silver for its “Autsome is Awesome“ initiative under the Cause-Related Marketing category.
Sunway Putra Mall’s win was in addition to another accolade accepted for the same initiative, a bronze in the Marketing Excellence Awards by Singapore-based Advertising+Marketing Magazine under the Corporate Social Responsibility category.
Sunway Malls chief executive officer HC Chan said the recent recognitions were the results of the group’s journey in crafting personalised experiences for the community.
“Each of our malls has its individual identity, but we are all unified with the same vision.
“The malls have their own interpretation to creating unique experiences that enrich lives, enabling Sunway Pyramid to
create a mobile app that features Malaysia’s first real-time indoor navigation and Sunway Putra Mall to become Malaysia’s first autism-friendly mall, ” said Chan.
With these new awards, Sunway Malls has won a total of 14 awards this year.
Of the 14, Sunway Putra Mall’s “Autsome“ won three, although the initiative only took off earlier this year.
“The main motivation behind ‘Autsome’ was to create an inclusive environment for the autistic community, “ said Sunway Velocity Mall general manager and ‘Autsome is Awesome’ creator Phang Sau Lian.
“To have our autism initiative recognised in the Asia Pacific region is just the first step.
“We hope our intention in creating an inclusive environment will be elevated on a global platform next.”
Phang acknowledged that the mall’s “Autsome“ achievement was proof that they had found success in their community engagement efforts.
“The community recognises our contribution to them through our initiative and many built affinity with us through this campaign along the way. If not for their support, we could never have created Malaysia’s first autism-friendly mall, ” she said.
Sunway Malls also received two other Asia Pacific awards earlier this month.
The mall group was awarded with a Leadership Award from the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC), the first group of malls in Asia Pacific and the first in Malaysia to have been acknowledged for their leadership role in advocating, educating and bringing awareness on the importance of forest sustainability.
The other was a gold for Best Brand Experience by CX Asia Award, an acknowledgement for Sunway Pyramid’s excellent customer experience.
Sunway Pyramid’s Lunar New Year Hakka Celebration, Sony PlayEverything Lounge and Artbox have also garnered a total of five Marketing Events Awards this year in Singapore.
Sunway Malls is gearing to be among Malaysia’s largest mall owner-operator as existing projects and those in the pipeline now stand at 7.7 million sq ft net lettable area (NLA) and that figure is planned to be increased to 10.2 million sq ft NLA in the next few years.
The malls under the group are Sunway Putra Mall and Sunway Velocity Mall in Kuala Lumpur, Sunway Carnival Mall in Penang, Sunway Big Box Village and Sunway Citrine Hub in Johor, as well as Sunway Giza Mall and Sunway Pyramid in Petaling Jaya.
