WOMEN whose husbands abandoned the family can apply for aid from state programmes designed for single mothers with documents to prove their claims.

State health, welfare, women empowerment and family committee chairman Dr Siti Mariah Mahmud said such women could lodge a police report and get support letters from community leaders to support their applications.

“In order to qualify for any aid from the state Welfare Department, documents are important.

“We know there are many women whose husbands have either abandoned the family or rarely visited them, ” she said in reply to Rajiv Rishyakaran (PH-Bukit Gasing) who asked on the eligibility of underprivileged mothers for state aid.

“So, with supporting documents, we do consider such applications.

“It is much easier for us to grant help to children who have been orphaned due to the death of their fathers compared with children abandoned by their fathers, ” she said.
