Platform for undergraduates to learn about social entrepreneurship

The winners of the Young Social Entrepreneur Competition.

MULTIMEDIA University (MMU) Melaka organised its second International Young Social Entrepreneurs Competition with an aim to hone creative graduates.

The event, under the purview of the Faculty of Business, was jointly organised by Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales (ICAEW) and supported by Malaysian Global Innovation and Creativity Centre.

A total of 155 teams from international and local universities participated in the preliminary round that ended on Aug 14.

The top 20 teams were then selected to outline their social enterprise ideas in the final round to a panel of judges from the industry.

The finalist teams consisted of participants from Birla Global University of India, Islamic University of Riau, Indonesia, Universitas Mercu Buana, Indonesia, Universiti Tunku Abdul Rahman (UTAR), KDU Penang University College and Multimedia University.

Event director Sharmila Rani Moganadas said the competition aimed to bring together students from local and foreign universities to lay their social enterprise ideas, and at the same time, create a platform for students to build network across universities, industry and professional bodies.

In addition, the event also aimed at educating and creating awareness of social entrepreneurship among students and the community.

The organising committee comprised 13 lecturers and 37 students from the Faculty of Business under the guidance of the Deputy Dean of Academic and Internationalisation Nun Shwu Huey.
