SELANGOR recorded 1.86 million domestic tourists visiting the state in the first half of this year.

The figure is a 4% increase compared with the number recorded during a similar period last year.

In 2018, the state hosted 4.01 million domestic tourists, which accounted for 55% of the total tourist arrivals for the year.

This was revealed by Selangor culture, tourism, Malay customs and heritage committee chairman Datuk Abdul Rashid Asari (PH-Selat Kelang).

Abdul Rashid added that Tourism Selangor was active in promoting the state to attract domestic tourists.

“Tourism Selangor took part in promotional programmes such as MATTA Fair, Mita Fair and other tourism fairs with the aim of attracting more domestic tourists.

“A programme called ‘Skuad Kembara Sekolah’ was also held in schools to promote tourist

destinations available in the state among teachers and students, ” he said.

Abdul Rashid said the programme received support from the Selangor Education Department which gave out participation certificates to students.

“We also worked with Tourism Malaysia and commercial airlines such as Malindo Air and AirAsia which offered tourism packages to the state, ” he added.

Abdul Rashid was responding to a question by Rajiv Rishyakaran (PH-Bukit Gasing), who asked if the state government used social media platforms to promote tourism products.

Abdul Rashid said the government used Facebook and Instagram among others to reach out to domestic consumers.

In response to a question from Chua Wei Kiat (PH-Rawang), who wanted to know the expected number of tourist arrivals next year, Abdul Rashid said it was estimated at 8 million.

“In conjunction with Visit Malaysia 2020, we target a 4% increase in tourist arrivals to the state.

“Several international events will also be taking place here such as Selangor International Indigenous Art Festival 2020, Malaysia Women Marathon 2020, Selangor TwinCity Marathon 2020, Tourism Selangor Golf Championship 2020, Selangor Raja Muda International Regatta 2020, Golf Open 2020, Retromania Gathering and Wings of KKB 2020, ” he added.
