MIRI: The National Disaster Management Agency (Nadma) is setting up emergency support teams in Sarawak as fear of floods looms.

Latest satellite images showed turbulent clouds building up in skies in the region.

Nadma, which is headed by Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail, is setting up Nadma Emergency Support Team (Nest) in all states to coordinate flood preparations with the state governments.

A circular on this has been distributed to all states.

Sarawak Fire and Rescue Department shared the circular in its chat groups.

“Nadma has identified liaison officers, one in each state, to head Nest in all the states, including Sabah and Sarawak.

“Nest in Sabah will also cover Labuan, ” it said.

The Nadma circular said the floods may hit between November and March 2020.

Weather predictions show that in November, the states projected to face floods are Kelantan, Terengganu and the northern states of Penang, Perlis, Kedah and Perak.

In December, floods are expected to hit Kelantan, Terengganu, Pahang and eastern Johor.

In January, eastern Johor, Pahang and western Sarawak would most likely be affected.

In February, the western half of Sarawak, from Kuching to Sibu are expected to see heavy rains that will bring floods.

Nadma is coordinating with the federal welfare department as well as respective state disaster management committees to look into food aid and other flood relief needs.
