IJM Land Bhd organised its second Deepavali Charity Cheer Programme this year, aimed at providing support and joy to three underprivileged families in Seremban.

The families were given RM500 cash and groceries worth RM500. IJM Land senior general manager Datuk Hoo Kim See said the initiative allowed the less fortunate to come as one family and celebrate the occasion with joy.

“At IJM Land, we believe it is our core responsibility to provide our community with the necessities during the festive season and we hope to make a positive impact in the lives of the less fortunate.

“Celebrations need not be confined to our own homes. Consequently, we gather annually with the underprivileged to celebrate festive occasions, in the efforts to spread happiness among families,” he said.

The initiative was led by Hoo and staff, and joined by Nilai assemblyman Arul Kumar Jambunathan, who is also state human resources, plantation and non-Muslim affairs committee chairman.

Goodie bags comprising rice, cooking oil, flour and cookies were distributed to the three families to lessen their burden in celebrating Deepavali.

Among the recipients was Letchumy, 28, who works as a dish washer at a local restaurant in Seremban to support her family.

Her three children, aged between five and 10, are not schooling due to lack of funds.

IJM Land provided Letchumy’s children with toys, stationery and flashcards and is working with the Social Welfare Department to assist her youngest son get a birth certificate.

Hoo said providing assistance to those in need goes beyond monetary support or contribution in kind. It can also be in the form of visiting the underprivileged and understanding their needs and background, to give them the help that they truly need.

He also encouraged the public to take the opportunity to contribute and make a difference in the community they live in.

“We at IJM Land are still committed to helping the well-being of the community through various initiatives including Deepavali Charity Cheer, and we hope to continue in the future,” said Hoo.

“We hope to light up the lives of these families, and give them some hope and respite from their daily financial woes — giving every family a chance to move towards a better future.”
