IN conjunction with National Environment Day, Selangor Environment Department (DOE) held a celebration with the Selangor government at Plaza Alam Sentral in Shah Alam.

Selangor DOE director Shafe’ee Yasin said the celebration, themed “Alam Sekitar Tanggungjawab Bersama” (the environment is our shared responsibility), would go on for a whole week statewide.

“I believe with programmes like this, environmental awareness can be spread and raised effectively, ” Shafe’ee said in his speech.

“This year’s theme focuses on raising awareness among the people, especially schoolchildren.

“With these campaigns, the government hopes society will be aware of the importance of environmental preservation.” He disclosed that Selangor DOE had signed a memorandum of understanding with seven companies as strategic partners to organise environmental conservation programmes.

“We currently have 1,177 members as Friends of the Environment in Selangor.

He urged more people to sign up as membership is free.

Friends of the Environment is a programme launched in 2009 under DOE to involve the public in environmental preservation.

Also present at the launch was state environment, green technology and consumer affairs committee chairman Hee Loy Sian.

Hee said the state government would continue taking responsibility in tackling environmental issues.

A half-day public event following the launch included activities such as aerobics, Enviro-Amazing Race, colouring contest, recycling and exhibition booths, dance and choral speaking performances.
