New technology expected to raise prawn production numbers

ISKANDAR PUTERI: The findings from a three-year research undertaken by Gelang Patah Fisheries Research Institute (FRI) on prawn breeding is expected to increase production numbers in Malaysia.

Fisheries Department director general Datuk Munir Mohd Nawi said currently, Malaysia produced about 100,000 metric tonnes of prawns per year, where about 40,000 metric tonnes were from aquaculture while the rest caught by fishermen at sea.
