PONTIAN: The Youth and Sports Ministry has allocated RM4mil to upgrade sports facilities in the Tanjung Piai parliamentary constituency, involving six futsal courts and one football field.

Its minister Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman said this was part of the total RM14.6mil that had been requested by the previous Tanjung Piai MP, the late Datuk Dr Md Farid Md Rafik.

“This is one of the plans that Dr Md Farid had for Tanjung Piai that had been approved by the government and we are just fulfilling his wishes.

“Throughout his tenure as an MP, Dr Md Farid had always stressed on the development in Tanjung Piai and the government decided to approve his wishes,” he added.

Syed Saddiq said this after officiating the Village Sports Carnival at Kompleks Pemuda Mukim Serkat near Kampung Serkat Laut here.

He added that the redevelopment of sports facilities in Tanjung Piai parliamentary constituency was among the top issues that Dr Md Farid had approached the ministry about.

Syed Saddiq, who is Muar MP, also said that he also welcomed suggestions and opinions from the residents of Tanjung Piai on how to make their life better.

To facilitate this, the Pakatan Harapan Youth chief said he would roll out a campaign called ‘Listening Tour’ where the coalition would collect suggestions from the people on the kind of development most needed in the area.

“The volunteers are the youth from Pakatan Harapan where, rather than sleeping in hotels or homestays, they will stay with the needy in Tanjung Piai and conduct activities with them to help improve their lives.

“We feel this will help us get real views from the people by placing ourselves in their shoes,” he said, adding that the tour will start next week throughout Tanjung Piai.

The Tanjung Piai by-election is being held following Dr Md Farid’s death last month. The nomination day for the by-election is Nov 2 while polling is on Nov 16.
