BOBA lovers were out in force to grab a variety of milk teas during the inaugural Boba Festival held as part of the Penang Coffee Festival at Gurney Plaza.

Visitor Hazrina Aziz said the festival offered an opportunity to sample the drinks all under one roof.

“My friends and I always go to different places around the island and the mainland to get our fix of boba tea.

“Today at this fest, we have so many boba tea vendors to choose from, ” she said.

The computer science student said she tried boba drinks from Xing Fu Tang, Goa Enough Tea and MEME.

Another festival-goer Komathi Seelan, who came with her daughter, said they decided to check out the festival after seeing the Instagram-worthy boba- inspired photo booth at the mall’s amphitheatre.

“My daughter is a fan of bubble tea and she drinks it almost every day.

“I guess this is a popular fad among young people nowadays.

“She loves the chewy tapioca pearls.

“Due to my health condition, I drink only boba tea with no added sugar.

“I am thankful most of the vendors here presented consumers with a ‘no sugar’ option so people like me can indulge in boba drinks too, ” the housewife said.

Pulau Tikus assemblyman Chris Lee Chun Kit, who launched the Boba Festival, said the state government would continue to position Penang as Asia’s renowned gastronomic hub.

“With the bubble milk tea fad spreading all over the world, I am glad the organiser has taken the initiative to come up with the first-ever Boba Festival in Penang, ” said Lee.

“The aim was to celebrate the wondrous diversity of bubble milk tea, boba-inspired food and desserts.”

He then toured the stalls to check out the products and speak to the vendors.

Also present were Gurney Plaza centre manager Peter Chan and Juru Sentral’s Xing Fu Tang director of marketing Yvonne Ng Geat Khon.

The recent three-day festival featured more than 20 vendors from the island and the mainland including Gao Enough Tea, Venzytea, MEME, Royaltea and Xing Fu Tang.

Festival-goers were entertained with cooking demonstrations and uniquely designed games and activities such as a boba milk tea drinking challenge, paint & sip workshop and boba photo booth contest.
