SEVERAL streets in the Gurney Drive-Tanjung Tokong area will be completely or partially closed for several hours tomorrow to make way for Penang Starwalk 2019, which will be flagged off at 7am from Gurney Paragon Mall.
The stretch of Gurney Drive from Jalan Pemenang to its junction with Jalan Tanjung Tokong will be closed from 5.30am.
Jalan Tanjung Tokong will be closed from that junction until the Jalan Seri Tanjung Pinang junction near Tesco after 6am.
All of Jalan Seri Tanjung Pinang will also be closed from 6.30am.
The stretch from Jalan Tanjung Tokong to Jalan Seri Tanjung Pinang (left lanes) will reopen at 9am.
Participants must follow the left lanes along the route, meaning that the lanes of Jalan Tanjung Tokong heading towards Seri Tanjung Pinang will be closed when they are walking there while the lanes on the other side will be closed when they are walking back towards Gurney Drive.
The roads will reopen in stages from 10am.
George Town police traffic chief Deputy Supt Mohamad Ridzuan Ishak said 150 police personnel would be stationed at strategic places to maintain traffic flow.
“Penang Island City Council and Malaysian Amateur Athletics Union personnel will also be around to control the participants and ensure that they follow the routes in an orderly manner,” said DSP Mohamad Ridzuan during a press conference at the George Town district police headquarters.
Motorists should avoid using the affected roads, which he said would reopen by noon.
He said participants and the public could park their vehicles at Gurney Paragon Mall, the parking lots along Gurney Drive after the junction with Jalan Pemenang, along Kelawei Road and other areas nearby.
“Participants are to avoid double-parking or parking haphazardly, obstructing entrances and traffic flow, as they may be issued with summonses,” he added.
Some 15,000 people have signed up for the 7km non-competitive walk organised by Star Media Group.
