Energy, Science, Technology, Environment and Climate Change Minister Yeo Bee Yin said the Federal Government would be giving out the solar panels which are specifically built for car parks.
“We found 50 solar panels from the previous government kept in a warehouse,” she said during a press conference after launching the Penang International Green Conference and Exhibition held at Gurney Paragon Mall on Saturday.
“We have decided to put the solar panels to good use and will be rolling them out.
“Five solar panels will be given to five local councils who participated in the low- carbon city framework by Malaysian Green Technology Corporation which is an agency under my ministry.
“The five recognised low- carbon cities namely Klang, Subang Jaya, Hang Tuah Jaya, Shah Alam and Seberang Prai will be getting one solar panel each.
“The remaining 45 will be given out equally to each state, meaning three for each state.”
Yeo said Tenaga Nasional Berhad’s subsidiary G-Sparx would be building the shaded car parks and the receiving school or government agency would not need to pay for anything.
“This project of installing 50 solar panels all around the country is worth RM25mil, with the ones earmarked for Penang to cost RM2mil,” she said.
Yeo said the Government had identified three schools in Penang as recipient of the solar panels but they were still conducting feasibility studies.
“The schools receiving the solar panels need to have land, sunlight and connection.
“The confirmed schools will be announced after the feasibility studies,” she said.
Yeo said the solar panels would be able to generate RM1,000 to RM4,000 savings per month even with solar leasing from G-Sparx.
She said that the Government hoped that this project would promote nett energy metering (NEM).
The concept of NEM is that the energy produced from the installed solar PV system will be consumed first, and any excess will be exported to TNB on a ‘one-on-one’ offset basis.
