THE public has been told to keep all 492 rivers and their tributaries in Negri Sembilan clean as they provide the bulk of raw water needed for consumption in the state.

Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Aminuddin Harun said this was important as the authorities have continuously taken measures to ensure rivers that were previously contaminated, such as Sungai Temiang, Sungai Sepang and Sungai Bukit Pelandok, remain clean.

“The steps include introducing a ‘Love our Rivers’ campaign to raise public awareness.

“And since these rivers are the main source of our drinking water, it is my hope that we will continue to keep them clean,” he said after presenting awards to the state’s Drainage and Irrigation Department (DID) employees in conjunction with its Innovation Day.

Aminuddin said Sungai Temiang used to be very polluted as irresponsible traders would dump rubbish and other waste into the river.

To address the problem, the state authorities introduced a new ruling prohibiting chicken traders from slaughtering poultry at the market.

“Rivers in the Bukit Pelandok area also used to be contaminated as some irresponsible pig farmers discharged effluents from their farms straight into the river.

“But these have been cleaned up and now we find that some operators have also opened restaurants along the river,” he said, adding that these areas were also a favourite spot for fishing enthusiasts.

Aminuddin warned that his administration would act against anyone found dumping rubbish or any other waste into the rivers.

In his speech earlier, Aminuddin expressed hope that DID would continue with efforts to rehabilitate rivers which were in categories four and five.

“The rivers in the state are some 3,770km long and it is my hope that the DID will continue monitoring the water quality especially in rivers which are considered not so clean,” he added.

Also present was state deputy DID director Hayati Zainal.
