SIBU: Blood donation campaign organisers have been urged to hold at least five campaigns a year so that the blood bank in Sibu Hospital will have sufficient supply.
Sibu Hospital director Dr Ngian Hie Ung said there many organisnig such campaigns in town but most were doing only two blood donation drives a year.
“We urge them to organise five times a year so that we can have regular donors and we will not have problem with the stock, ” she said at a press conference to announce the forthcoming Malaysian Red Crescent Society 2019 National Blood Donation campaign.
Dr Ngian is the organising chairperson.
She said the blood bank usually ran out of supply during major festive seasons such as Chinese New Year, Hari Raya and Gawai.
“We are monitoring our stock frequently to ensure that we have 100 pints at any one time. If we run out, we will normally send out an SOS to blood donation campaign organisers, ” she said.
On the national level campaign which will take place on Sept 28 at Tanahmas Hotel, Dr Ngian said they wanted youths below 40 years old to join a seminar entitled “Safe Blood For All.”
She said this was because they wanted more youths to be involved in the blood donation drive.
The event, which will also see a blood donation campaign taking place from 9am to 11am, will be launched by MRCS national vice-chairman Datuk Mohamad Rafiai Moktar.
Recognition certificates will be presented to individuals who had donated more than 30 pints of blood while the winning team will receive a challenge trophy.
“We hope the public can come to donate their blood as we are targeting to collect 50 pints, ” she said.
