SIBU: Longhouse fires remain a big problem in Sarawak, with a total of 14 cases reported statewide so far this year.Losses were estimated at RM10.1mil so far this year.

The state Fire and Rescue Department said in the 14 cases, 181 doors were destroyed from a total of 341 doors.

The fires were reported in Sri Aman Division (2), Betong Division (3), Sarikei Division (2), Mukah Division (1), Sibu Division (2), Bintulu Division (2) and Miri Division (2).

“So far, one death was reported and another four persons injured in the fires, ” the department said.

As to the cause of the fire, it said eight of the cases were due to cooking activities, four due to short-circuits while another two cases were still under investigation.The latest longhouse fire involved Rumah Andrew Lawai, in Pakan, Sarikei Division where the firefighters were hampered by lack of water.

They had to fill up the fire engine’s water tanks from a fire hydrant located 500m away.

Twenty residents, including two children from the seven-door longhouse, lost their homes. – By ANDY CHUA
