KULAI: The Johor government will set up a Transport Council to establish a more efficient transportation system in the state.
State works, transport and infrastructure committee chairman Mohd Solihan Badri said the council would be formed before the end of this year and the paperwork tabled at the state executive council meeting soon.
He said the council, which would be chaired by Johor Mentri Besar Datuk Dr Sahruddin Jamal, would comprise departments, agencies and government-linked companies including Iskandar Regional Development Authority (IRDA), Public Works Department, Irrigation and Drainage Department as well as Road Transport Department.
Mohd Solihan said the council will be responsible for planning, monitoring and implementing the transportation system, especially traffic at the Causeway and urban areas.
“The traffic congestion not only occurs at the CIQ complex and the Causeway but also before and after routes.
“In addition, we are also looking at local issues such as traffic congestion at certain places and we will continue to work closely with the relevant departments and agencies, ” he said after launching a road safety campaign organised by Kulai JKR and Senai Airport Bhd here.
He added that the role of Johor Transport Council would be different from the Johor Public Transport Corporation.
Meanwhile, Mohd Solihan said a fund would be set up to conduct research, especially to help ease traffic congestion in the state. —Bernama
