Revving up Merdeka mood

Convoy participants embarking on their journey to spread the Merdeka message among villagers in Kubang Pasu, Kedah.

MORE than 300 motorcyclists travelled throughout the Kubang Pasu parliamentary constituency to encourage the locals to fly the Jalur Gemilang in Jitra, Alor Setar.

Known as the Kubang Pasu Merdeka Tour Convoy, the programme saw the riders starting their 126km journey from Darul Aman Square before ending at the Desa Napoh Community Centre.

Programme director Shafizan Taib said the participants from all walks of life and various communities visited more than 50 villages to spread the spirit of patriotism.

“We want to encourage the public to fly the Jalur Gemilang at their homes.

“It is meant to instil and inculcate the national spirit among the locals, especially the younger generation.

“You can express your love for the country to mark the Merdeka month celebration,” he said.

Shafizan told Bernama after Deputy Finance Minister cum Kubang Pasu MP Datuk Amiruddin Hamzah flagged off the convoy on Saturday.

Meanwhile, 19 students from University Technology Mara (UiTM) Shah Alam will embark on a 400km pedalling expedition from Pasir Puteh, Kelantan, to Perlis in conjunction with the Merdeka month celebration.

Programme director Ahmad Falahi Ahmad Suhaimi said the cycling expedition was expected to take five days.

“Apart from cycling, the participants will also be involved in charity work including carrying out gotong-royong in Jeli, Gerik and Yan,” he told reporters after launching the cycling event at the Wakaf Raja Mosque in Pasir Puteh on Saturday.

The mosque’s iman, Shahifudin Abdullah earlier flagged off the cyclists.

Ahmad Falahi said the programme was aimed at instilling love and patriotism among the youth as well as bringing them closer to the mosque. – Bernama
