Warm welcome for Mickey Mouse

MICKEY Mouse fans of all ages were out in force to welcome the adorable cartoon character at Disney’s ‘Mickey Go Malaysia – Jom Jalan Jalan with Mickey & Friends’ roadshow.

Several hundreds of them thronged Gurney Plaza’s extension wing in Penang to catch a glimpse of Mickey Mouse in a meet-and-greet session.

Among the excited visitors were Wan Nor Rashidi, 38, and his three daughters.

The electrical engineer, who lives in Seberang Jaya, came as early as 11am for a chance to participate in the meet-and-greet session.

“We attended the roadshow at Mid Valley Megamall in Kuala Lumpur but we missed the meet-and-greet session there.

“We hope to get a photo with Mickey Mouse later as my daughters love Mickey Mouse, ” he said.

Asked who his favourite Disney character was, he replied, “Donald Duck”.

He said that though both Mickey and Donald are lovable characters, the mouse and the duck couldn’t be more different.

“While Mickey Mouse is calm and collected, Donald is always lashing out and making a mess. I also love Donald’s voice.”

The mall’s extension wing came alive with Instagram-worthy backdrops of Penang scenes with a Mickey twist.

Hundreds of visitors were seen taking photographs in front of backdrops of shophouses ranging from Warong Mickey to Minnie’s Hair Salon and more.

There were also interactive experiences and traditional games for the entire family.

Gooi Yi Ling, 28, said the Disney roadshow came as a surprise to her.

“I decided to drop by Gurney Plaza just for lunch but my two-year-old son saw a Mickey Mouse cutout at the entrance and immediately ran inside.

“We ended up taking photographs instead of having lunch.

“My son had fun playing indoor mini football with other children too, ” she said.

Another shopper Umar Shukor said his granddaughter enjoys watching Disney classic cartoons very much.

“Her birthday is coming up soon, so I brought her here to pick out her birthday present while checking out the Disney promotion, ” he said.

The roadshow also features a pop-up store selling Disney merchandise ranging from apparel to tumblers and shoes.

Gurney Plaza shoppers can also redeem a limited edition ‘Mickey Go Malaysia’ tote bag at the information counter while stocks last.

The ‘Mickey Go Malaysia – Jom Jalan Jalan with Mickey & Friends’ roadshow is being held at Gurney Plaza in Penang and Mid Valley Megamall in Kuala Lumpur from now until Sunday.

Then the roadshow is heading to East Coast Mall in Pahang from Aug 29 to Sept 16 and The Mall Mid Valley Southkey in Johor from Aug 28 to Sept 16.
