THE one-day Trash-Free Hill campaign is back again this year.
The event which aims to clear Penang Hill of all rubbish will be carried out with the support of some 1, 000 volunteers this time around.
Penang Hill Corporation general manager Datuk Cheok Lay Leng said the Trash-Free Hill 2019 would begin at one of the eight hiking trails around Penang Hill at 6.30am on Sept 29.
“The remaining seven trails will all begin at 7.30am and end at Dataran, near the Penang Hill Upper Station at 1pm, ” he said at a press conference also attended by state environment committee chairman Phee Boon Poh in Komtar.
Cheok said the objective of the event was to protect and preserve Penang Hill and its water catchment areas while increasing public awareness on the importance of keeping Penang Hill clean.
“The rubbish retrieved by the hikers will be collected and weighed by Universiti Sains Malaysia personnel. The data would then be analysed to determine how much waste was found as a whole.”
All the volunteers will be provided with T-shirts, drawstring bags, ponchos and buns by the sponsors.
Cheok urged volunteers to bring their own drinking water as bottled water will not be provided in solidarity with the state government’s call for reduction in the use of plastic containers.
Meanwhile, Phee said the state had lent support to the event, also in conjunction with World Clean-up Day.
“We do not believe in penalties and fines for littering.
“Going up Penang Hill should be a fun-filled activity and creating awareness of littering should be the way, ” he said.
