ASPEN Group’s umbrella-sharing initiative, described as the first community effort of its kind, received accolades during the CSR Malaysia Awards 2019.

The Group was honoured with the ‘Company of The Year Award’ in the Overall Excellence-Property Development for the initiative.

Launched in August and September last year in Penang and Singapore respectively, the initiative is meant to provide people on streets with a simple convenience – umbrellas – to get shelter from the sun or rain.

In Penang, the umbrellas and stands can be found at 12 bus stops and eight schools while in Singapore, they are placed at some of the Admiralty’s HDB blocks and community centre, as well as St Andrew’s Junior College and the bus stop opposite the institution.

One can grab an umbrella from any one of the stands, and return the umbrellas to any of these points after use. This is to ensure others are able to enjoy the same convenience.

Representing the Group, its executive deputy chairman Datuk Seri Nazir Ariff received the award from Women, Family and Community Development Deputy Minister Hannah Yeoh during the awards night at a hotel in Kuala Lumpur recently.

Nazir thanked CSR Malaysia for the recognition, and said all companies should do something for the community and the less fortunate.

“Everyone can easily be a part of this initiative through three simple steps — take, use and return.

“Kindness is essential and everyone should play a role to promote good value and belief among one another.

“Through this practice, we want the community to take the lead and change their mindset by sharing the good things with everyone.

“The umbrellas will help someone else on another day and this cycle will go on, ” he said with the hope that the community would help the Group achieve its objective.

Nazir said they were committed to the effort as missing umbrellas had been replaced weekly.

“We also urge the community to let us know how we can improve on this initiative.

“There are some organisations which are keen to work with us, and we are open to any collaboration efforts as long as it meets the initiative’s objective, ” he said.
