STUDENTS of The One Academy designed and showcased their vision of a modern lifestyle using products that were awarded the coveted Taiwan Excellence Awards in a design competition.

The collaboration saw four students – Dinh Phuong Thao, Tang Ker Nee, Lai Kok Wei and Cindy Noveli from the school of Interior Architecture and Design – emerging victorious in the competition.

The task given to the students was to conceptualise and design a sketch of a fully-furnished space that utilises Taiwan Excellence Award products by various brands.

Thao and Tang, who bagged first prize, walked away with an iPad each while Lai received a Bluetooth speaker for coming in second. The second runner-up, Noveli, won herself a portable hard disk.

When asked about what motivated him to join the competition, Lai said he found out about it through one of the groups organised by the Interior Design faculty, Design Ninja.

The group enables students to join numerous competitions and projects in a bid to learn more about trends as well as the industry’s design standards.

Most of the students cited the need to divide their time as a challenge during the competition.

“It was a really stressful time but looking back, the effort that I put in was worth the sleepless nights, ” recounted Tang.

Another trial faced was using software to produce realistic looking products in their designs.

Ensuring that the products were recognisable was vital as they had to incorporate Taiwan Excellence Award-winning items into their interior designs.

For Cindy, a very trying aspect was to nail the balance between a simple yet beautiful and functional design.

Lai said, “Competitions such as these are an excellent way to hone our design skills and provides a great learning opportunity.

“Another important thing to note is to always be open to criticism, ” he added.

Noveli said, “Learn from your mistake and always ask for people’s feedback on your work, especially your lecturers. My lecturers were always there to give me pointers and comment on my work which made me work even harder.”

For years, the Taiwan Excellence Award has been bestowed upon outstanding products in the smart technologies, renovation materials, household hardware and other home solutions categories.

t has been synonymous with reliable quality of good design in a bid to boost competitiveness in the international market.
