KLUANG: The Johor government will proceed with the construction of the Bukit Payong sanitary landfill in Parit Sulong near Batu Pahat.

Mentri Besar Datuk Dr Sahruddin Jamal said the decision was made following the closure of CEP 1 Estate Sanitary Landfill in Simpang Renggam in March after reports of leachate overflow into a nearby river.

“We have terminated solid waste disposal operations in Simpang Renggam, and now we will continue with the waste-to-energy (WTE) project in Bukit Payong,” he said after launching the Unity at Heart Carnival in conjunction with the state-level unity week at Dewan Muafakat Simpang Renggam near here.Prior to this, the Federal government had postponed the construction of the Bukit Payong sanitary landfill due to protest by residents in the area.

Johor local housing, science and technology committee chairman Tan Hong Pin was reported as saying the postponement was made after taking into consideration the concerns of residents who objected to the project due to its proximity to housing estates.
