Department store chain celebrates silver jubilee in style

IT WAS a night of glitz and glamour at Sogo Malaysia’s Touch Sogo Charity and Business Partners’ Appreciation Nite 2019, which also saw the retailer marking its 25th anniversary in style.

Held at Shangri-la Hotel Kuala Lumpur, over 500 guests attended the event, including PKR president Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, business partners, employees and the media.

Sogo Group of Companies group managing director Datuk Alfred Cheng expressed his gratitude to those present for their valuable support through the years.

“Without the support of the government, various agencies, business partners and most of all our committed and dedicated Team Sogo, we won’t be here today.

“Despite the relatively sluggish retail market for the past two years, Sogo has continued to do well with above average growth.

“This year heralds a new era for Sogo with two new stores in i-City in Shah Alam and Midvalley Southkey in Johor Baru.

“Also, we have invested with our business partners approximately RM100mil and provided direct and indirect employment to more than 1,000 people,” said Cheng.

He added that the brand would continue to pursue the strategy of only opening flagship stores.

“These flagship stores will become centres of social interaction and activities for their respective communities with the best selection of merchandise, pampering services and food and beverage offerings for a more immersive experience.”

The three upcoming flagship stores are Seibu The Exchange in Kuala Lumpur in 2021; Sogo in Prai, Penang in 2022 and Sogo Mayang Mall, Terengganu also in 2022.

“Seibu The Exchange is our most ambitious project, where we aim to present the first international luxury department store in Malay-sia to showcase our concept, innovation, luxury offerings and services.

“We believe that in Seibu, we will be providing a concept and platform that will not only provide a brand new shopping experience to Malaysians but will attract foreign visitors to enjoy, shop, eat and play.”

A total of 175 awards were presented to Sogo’s business partners for their outstanding yearly sales performance. CB Franchising Sdn Bhd from Bonia Shop Leathergoods and Uniqlo Malaysia Sdn Bhd were recipients of the Super Blue Diamond Award.

Contemporary acapella group Colour of Voices captivated guests with their multi-lingual performance during a four-course dinner.

A collaboration between Touch Sogo Malaysia Foundation and Earth Heir to connect refugee artisans to the global market was also showcased.

The stage was transformed into a fashion runway as models strutted across the ballroom in Carven Ong’s “Superpropulsion” collection.

There was also a cake-cutting ceremony before the night ended on a high note with Cassidy La Creme, dubbed the Marilyn Monroe of Malaysia, serenading the crowd.
