THE SS2 Market Phase 1 is ready to begin operations.

The popular wet market given an upgrade by Petaling Jaya City Council (MBPJ) was ceremonially handed over to the traders in the presence of Kampung Tunku assemblyman Lim Yi Wei.

Damansara MP Tony Pua said both traders and customers had requested the upgrade for a long time.

“We got the budget for this project about four years ago and the project started about one-and-a-half years ago,’’ said Pua.

“Now the customers will feel more comfortable in the market and can move about without getting tripped up by the umbrella stands,” he said.

He explained that previously it was very difficult for customers to walk because the stalls’ umbrella stands littered the narrow passageway.

“Traders will also be able to conduct business in a better environment.”

He also said that the Phase 1 trading space would be shared with the night market in the evening of every Monday.

About 138 traders will be moved into the upgraded market under Phase 1.

However, MBPJ has built a total of 184 lots to accommodate extra traders as it intends to legalise some of the traders who are currently unlicensed.

Petaling Jaya City councillor Billy Wong Swee Sang said the licensed traders could move in immediately while MBPJ was processing the rest.

He estimated that it would take some time to sort out the illegal ones.

He also said that Phase 2 of the project would take about six months to complete, adding that a total of RM3.3mil would be spent on the entire project.

Meanwhile, Lim warned the traders that their licence would be revoked if they were caught renting their lots out to a third party.

She said the current unlicensed traders who had been renting from unscrupulous licensed traders would be given priority by MBPJ in legalising them.
