KUANTAN: The owners of pre-war buildings along Jalan Mahkota and Jalan Besar must ensure their properties are in good condition, with fire safety measures in place.
State Local Government and Housing Committee chairman Abd Rahim Muda said the buildings had their own historic value and any renovations or upgrading works should not mar its facade.
“Based on our records, more than 100 premises were built in 1926. Some were built as early as in 1913. The structures are still strong and some just need some touch-ups to look better.
“The buildings reflect Kuantan in the olden days and are part of the history of the town,” Abd Rahim said after visiting the site of a fire in Jalan Mahkota here.
He said these buildings had been gazetted as heritage buildings and its owners had to appreciate their historic value.
Also present was state Fire and Rescue Department director Nor Hisham Mohammad.
On June 11, three buildings were partly razed. The cause of the fire is still being investigated. — By NIK NAIZI HUSIN
