LENDING colour to the month-long Hari Raya celebrations in Penang will be a musical concert featuring local artistes.

The ‘Penang Celebrates: Hari Raya with Radio Sinar @ Design Village’ show will be held at the south entrance of Design Village Penang Outlet Mall (DVO) in Batu Kawan on the Penang mainland, on Saturday, from 6pm to 10pm.

Artistes Benzooloo, Sandra Dianne, Ara Johari and Nama girl group as well as Radio Sinar deejays Pink Azwan and Adi Fashla will entertain guests from 7pm onwards, before the night ends with a fireworks display at 10pm.

State tourism, arts, culture and heritage committee chairman Yeoh Soon Hin said his office thought out of the box and decided to celebrate the festival through a concert rather than the conventional open house event.

“This will be the first time a concert is being held for Hari Raya. It will be our fourth programme under ‘Penang Celebrates’ series since it started last year.

“The concert will be a good platform for the locals and tourists to experience the unique cultural diversity of Penang.

“We will retain the traditional characteristics of the festival, but will celebrate it in a more dynamic, extraordinary and contemporary way,” he said in a press conference at Komtar on Thursday.

Yeoh said the organising committee decided on holding the event on the mainland so that more people from the area could attend the concert whilst celebrating Hari Raya together.

At the event, visitors could also savour traditional Malay food besides enjoying a variety of food sold by the many food trucks.

There will also be a booth for traditional Malay games for the visitors to get to know more about the community’s culture.

“We hope to organise more programmes under ‘Penang Celebrates’ initiative and I believe Penang can become a popular destination for programmes, concerts and festivals,” he added.

Also present were Astro Radio Airtime and Digital Sales Account executive Ozi Wong and DVO advertising and promotion executive Mohd Faeiz Mohd Shaffin.
