JOHOR BARU: The public play an important role in curbing the drug addiction menace.

State Health director Dr Selahudden Aziz said there were multiple factors that drove a person to take drugs, such as family issues, relationships and even personality.

“The public and family members of drug addicts can help them by seeking guidance or reporting the matter to the authorities.

“Do not turn a blind eye. Drug addicts come from different backgrounds and with different reasons for their addiction. They need help.

“The important thing is to learn to cope with problems. Taking drugs will not make them go away,” he said in response to a report in The Star stating the national drug support system to help drug addicts was outdated and not relevant anymore.

“Those with an addiction must be willing to come forward and seek help. We have treatment centres across the state as well as counsellors to help them,” he said.
